MOSCOW, July 7. /TASS/. The Russian Olympic Committee intends to submit applications for the participation of 410 athletes in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on July 21, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said on Thursday.
"We are to submit the combined application for 410 athletes on July 21," Mutko said.
He said 620 athletes are preparing for the Olympics.
"A total of 320 athletes received licenses. We are waiting for the decision on track and field athletes," the minister said.
In mid-June the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) decided to keep in force the suspension of the Russia’s membership in the global athletics body. The suspension implied that Russian field and track athletes were ineligible to take part in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.
However, the Olympic summit ruled that athletes not guilty of anti-doping violations will be able to compete in the Rio Games under the Russian flag.
July 4 was set as the deadline for the submission of individual applications, while the 2016 Summer Olympics are scheduled to be held in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro between August 5 and 21.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne announced on Monday that it received a filed lawsuit from the Russian Olympic Committee against IAAF in defense of the national field and track athletes wishing to participate in the 2016 Olympics.
