NEW YORK, April 1. /TASS/. World’s No. 8 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus will clash on Saturday in the final match of the US Miami Open, which boasts $6.8 million up for grabs, against Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Azarenka battled into the final of the Miami Open tennis tournament following the straight sets victory over World’s No. 3 Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-2, 7-5.
Russia’s Kuznetsova also delighted spectators with the straight sets victory in her Thursday’s semifinal match defeating Swiss player Timea Bacsinszky 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 56 minutes.
Azarenka, 26, and Kuznetsova, 30, faced each other eight times at various tennis tournaments throughout their professional career, however, their last encounter took place more than three years ago.
They have an equal record of 4-4 of wins and losses in their eight encounters and they already played each other at Miami Open in 2008 with Russia’s Kuznetsova winning the match. However, in their last meeting at the 2013 Australian Open, Azarenka defeated Kuznetsova in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
"We haven't played each other in a while but I think we know each other pretty well," the official website of the Women Tennis Association (WTA) quoted Azarenka as saying about her upcoming match with Kuznetsova,.
"The last time we played we were both in different stages of our career so it's interesting to see us coming back and playing such a high level of tennis. It's gonna be tough but I'm very looking forward to this challenge," Azarenka added.
Russia’s Kuznetsova, the first to reach the final before Azarenka, said after her semifinal victory after Bacsinszky she was glad to be fighting among top players again and to have some rest before the final match.
"I enjoyed the fight and I'm happy I'm still able to play against the best in the world," Kuznetsova, who last time won the Miami Open tournament ten years ago, was quoted by the WTA website as saying. "I was praying to finish it in two sets so I would have a little more time to rest.".
