SYDNEY, January 18. /TASS/. Russia’s titled tennis star Maria Sharapova began this year’s season with a victory in the first round of the Australian Open, which kick started on Monday the 2016 Grand Slam series.
Seeded-five Sharapova proceeded to the next round of the tournament in Melbourne after defeating in straight sets emerging 21-year-old Japanese player Nao Hibino — 6-1, 6-3.
The 28-year-old Sharapova, who is the winner of the 2008 Australian Open, will play in the next round Alexandra Sosnovich of Belarus, who is in the first round defeated Russia’s Yevgeniya Rodina 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
