ASTRAKHAN, January 12. /TASS/. Russia’s southern city Astrakhan will be hosting this spring the 2016 Summer Olympics qualification tournament in women’s handball, Konstantin Markelov, a deputy governor of the Astrakhan Region, announced on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
"National women’s handball teams from Russia, Poland, Mexico and Sweden will clash in the city of Astrakhan this March for the right to compete in the Olympics," Markelov said.
The Russian Ministry of Physical Culture and Sport’s department in the Astrakhan Region told TASS that the qualification tournament was intended to be held on March 18-20, 2016 at the Zvyozdnyi sports complex, which has an accommodating capacity of some 6,000-seats.
Astrakhan’s only contenders to host the 2016 Olympic qualifiers for women’s handball teams were the Russian cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Krasnodar.
