MOSCOW, November 16. /TASS/. Russia will not boycott the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro despite the severe sanctions against the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF), President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Alexander Zhukov said on Monday.

When asked by a journalist whether Russia could boycott the 2016 Olympics, he said definitely, "No."

The Independent Commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) delivered last Monday, November 9, a report on its investigation into doping abuse allegations involving Russian athletes and recommended that the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) suspend all athletes of the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF) from participation in international competitions.

It also recommended on Monday to ban for life five Russian athletes and five coaches over their involvement in doping abuse violations as well as to strip the Moscow anti-doping laboratory of its license.

On Friday, IAAF Council arrived at a conclusion that the ARAF report on anti-doping measures was unconvincing and passed a decision to temporarily suspend ARAF’s membership.

Hence, Russian athletics team may be banned from taking part in both the winter championships due to take place from March 17 to 20, 2016 in the United States, and in the Olympic Games in Brazil in August 2016.

The 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro from August 5 through August 21, 2016.
