MOSCOW, September 4. /TASS/.The Executive Committee of the Russian Football Union (RFU) has set as its priority task the national football team’s qualification for the 2016 UEFA Euro Cup in France, Igor Lebedev, a member of the committee, said on Friday.
"We have discussed the way the Russian national team plays," Lebedev told journalists following the RFU Executive Committee’s session on Friday. "We have set the task for the team to qualify for the Euro Cup."
This week the Russian national football team was intensively training at the Arena-Khimki stadium in the Moscow Region preparing for the 2016 Euro Cup qualifier against Sweden and an away friendly against Lichtenstein, to be held on September 5 and 8 respectively.
The national team’s qualifier defeat to Austria in mid-June placed in extreme jeopardy the country’s chances of travelling to France next year for the Euro Cup. The Russian national team is currently ranked 3rd in its qualifying Group G with 8 points below 2nd ranked Sweden (12 points), while the Austrian team increased its lead over the rest of the five national teams in the group to 16 points.
Russia’s 2016 UEFA Euro Cup qualifier against Sweden is scheduled to kick off this Saturday at the Okritie Arena in Moscow at 19:00 local time (16:00 GMT).
