MOSCOW, September 2. /TASS/. The family of American boxer, rapper and actor Roy Jones Jr fully supports his decision to get Russian citizenship, he told TASS on Wednesday.
"My family has backed my decision," Jones said. "At first they asked me to be very careful, as it’s a foreign country. But when my wife came to Russia and saw people’s attitude to me, she supported my wish. My family understands how important it is for me to be here and to be useful."
On August 19, the boxer asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to grant him Russian citizenship.
Putin agreed to help Jones on the condition the boxer links his personal future with Russia.
Roy Jones Jr., born in 1969, has been viewed as the world’s top boxer regardless of weight category. He began his professional boxing career in 1989 and won world titles in four weight categories.
He scored a unique achievement in winning world titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight classes. In all, he has 62 wins and 8 losses to his name, among them taking silver at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.
