KUALA LUMPUR, July 31. /TASS/. Beijing, winning the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, will perfectly organise and hold the games, Russian Olympic Committee head Alexander Zhukov told TASS on Friday.
Beijing had been selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by a 44-40 vote earlier on Friday, defeating the bid from Almaty, Kazakhstan’s former capital, and becoming the first city to be awarded both summer and winter games.
"I think China’s organisation of the Olympics will be brilliant," said Zhukov, chairing the IOC Evaluation Commission for the 2022 winter events.
"They have huge experience and everything to host the Games successfully," he said, also praising Almaty’s bid and assessing that the city had chances to be awarded the 2026 Olympics.
"Why not? By 2026 they will be ready. Already by 2017, when the city hosts the Universiade, all facilities will be built," Zhukov said.
Choosing Beijing to host 2022 Winter Olympic Games is a safe and historical decision for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), IOC President Thomas Bach told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
At the 128th IOC session in Kuala Lumpur, Beijing has been chosen as a host for 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Kazakhstan’s city of Almaty was another candidate for hosting 2022 Olympics. Beijing won over Almaty by 4 votes, receiving a total of 44 votes of IOC members.
Beijing is a safe choice because the Chinese capital has a brilliant experience of holding competitions at the highest level, Bach said. The decision is also historical because Beijing will become the first city to host both summer and winter Olympic Games, he added.
The Chinese capital hosted Summer Olympic Games in 2008.
The Olympic Games will be held in Asia for the third time in a row after PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
Olympic events in Beijing will be held in three places - central Beijing (opening ceremony, figure skating, short track speed skating, hockey, curling, speed skating), north-western Yanqing County (alpine skiing, bobsleigh, luge, skeleton) and Zhangjiakou city (cross country skiing, ski jumping, biathlon, freestyle skiing, snowboard).
