BUENOS AIRES, July 5 /TASS/. The Chilean football team has won the America Cup for the first time in its history and the right to participate in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. The Chileans defeated Argentina in the America Cup final match held in Santiago. The regular and extra time ended in a draw (0-0). The Chilean team won the penalty shoot-out 4-1.
The Chileans had never won the home America Cup tournament which was held for the 44th time. The home stadium in Santiago is a happy place for the Chilean football team. The last time they lost there was the 2014 World Cup qualifier vs. Argentina in October 2012.
The Chilean team was the America Cup finalist four times - in 1955, 1956, 1979 and 1987. The Chileans lost to Argentina 0-1 in the final match almost 60 years ago.
The next America Cup will be held in the United States in 2016.
