OSTRAVA, May 14. /TASS/. Unstoppable team Canada continued its crushing winning streak at the 2015 Ice Hockey World Championship in the Czech Republic creaming Belarus 9-0 in a quarterfinal match on Thursday to grab a spot in the semifinals round on Saturday.
Reigning Olympic champions Canada spared no minutes in the opening period of the quarterfinal match peppering with shots the Belarusian goal, guarded by Ottawa-born goalkeeper Kevin Lalande.
The Canadians retreated for the break after the first period with the scoreboard flashing the 4-0 advantage over the Belarusian opponents. The second period saw the advantage grow to 6-0.
After Canada burnt the net of the Belarusian goalie for the seventh time in the middle of the third period, they decided to give no mercy to the ex-Soviet republic’s squad scoring two more goals to leave the final score at 9-0.
The confidence boasting Canadian team will clash in the semifinal game on Saturday with the winner of today’s quarterfinal match between the hosts, the Czech Republic, and Finland, whose meeting begins at 8:15 p.m. local time (18:15 GMT).
In another quarterfinal match earlier in the day the United States cruised past by Switzerland 3-1 and are now facing in the semifinal round the winner of the quarterfinal encounter between Russia and Sweden, who are scheduled to clash later in the day in Ostrava.
