OSTRAVA, May 14. /TASS/. The United States cleared the quarterfinals stage of the 2015 Ice Hockey World Championship in the Czech Republic securing a birth in the semifinals after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in Ostrava on Thursday.
The score of the match was opened by Switzerland’s Roman Josi on the 14th minute of the first period and remained the only goal scored by the Swiss squad in the whole quarterfinal encounter.
Following the break after the first period the US team returned to the second one with Ben Smith scoring in the middle of the period to inspire his teammate Charlie Coyle to put another shut past by the Swiss goalie in less than a minute.
The third and the winning goal of the US team was scored by Jake Gardiner, who shot the net-burner in the middle of the third period.
The US team will now face in the semifinal round the winner of the quarterfinal encounter between Russia and Sweden, who are facing each other later in the day in Ostrava.
The American squad already played Russia within the Group B qualifying matches defeating the Red Machine 4-2.
In other quarterfinal matches on Thursday Canada takes on Belarus and the hosting Czech team is facing off Finland in the country’s capital of Prague.
