MOSCOW, April 14 /TASS/. Maria Sharapova, Russia’s number one tennis player, will be unable to play for Russia in a Fed Cup semifinal vs. Germany due to injury, a Russian Tennis Federation source told TASS. The Russia-Germany Fed Cup semi is due to take place in Sochi on April 18-19.
Initially, the Russian Fed Cup team was supposed to comprise the strongest players: Maria Sharapova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Vesnina. Kuznetsova and Vesnina are already training in Sochi.
Sharapova’s injury may also force her to miss the WTA tournament in Stuttgart (starting on April 20) which she won last year.
