IOC President Bach calls organization of Youth Olympics in China ‘flawless’

NANJING, August 28. /ITAR-TASS/. President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach described the organization of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in China’s Nanjing as "flawless".

“The organization of these Games was perfectly flawless,” Bach said, addressing the closing ceremony of the Youth Games on Thursday.

“These Summer Youth Olympic Games were a resounding success thanks to our wonderful Chinese hosts. All of us, from every corner of the world, would like to thank the government and the people of China, Jiangsu and Nanjing,” the IOC president said.

“I would like to thank all our Chinese hosts. With your already world-famous efficiency and with your overwhelming friendliness you have made all of us feel at home in Nanjing, this ancient great city, in this modern and dynamic city, capital of the Jiangsu province.”

Addressing to all young athletes competing in the Youth Games, Bach said, “You have given us a glimpse of your bright future and the bright future of the Olympic Movement.”

“Only some of these young athletes can return home with a medal. But all of you can return home knowing that you did your very best. This is why you all can be happy. This is why we all are so proud of you. So take this spirit of the Nanjing Summer Youth Olympic Games home.”

“Now is the moment, when I have to say farewell and to declare the Summer Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014 closed,” Bach said and concluded his speech by inviting everyone to the next Youth Olympics, which will be hosted by Argentina’s Buenos Aires in 2018.

The 2nd Youth Summer Olympic Games were held in China’s Nanjing between August 16 and 28. The team of young athletes from the host country won most medals of the Games boqasting a total of 65 medals (38 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze).

The team of young Russian athletes finished in the second place after China in terms of overall medals won having brought their country a total of 57 medals (27 gold, 19 silver and 11 bronze).
