GENEVA, June 13. /ITAR-TASS/. Ukraine has been stripped of the right to host next year's continental championship amid political and economic turmoil, Europe’s basketball federation said on its website.
FIBA Europe, the continental governing body, said on Friday it had "decided to relocate EuroBasket 2015 from Ukraine to a new destination(s)," without giving further details.
The decision to strip Ukraine of its right to play host to EuroBasket 2015 was made by the organization’s council.
Ukraine was awarded the biennial championship in December 2011, which was scheduled to be played in five cities Kiev, Donetsk, Lviv, Odessa, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk.
In March, FIBA Europe required that Ukraine provided additional guarantees needed for the tournament.
New FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel and Secretary General Kamil Novak visited Ukraine on Tuesday to discuss EuroBasket 2015 with the country's representatives.
Demirel and Novak were received in Kiev by Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the Minister for Youth and Sports, Dmytro Bulatov, together with the President of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation Sasha Volkov and Secretary General Sasha Larin.
The newly elected FIBA Europe Board, which met in Munich on Friday, was expected to make a decision on the EuroBasket 2015 hosting issue.
A number of Federations have already expressed a written intent to organise the tournament in the event FIBA Europe decides to relocate the championship.
