KIEV, March 19. /ITAR-TASS/. Ukraine has given up the right to stage the Eurobasket 2015 due to the unstable situation in the country, Ukrainian media quoted the head of the organizing committee of the European Basketball Championship in 2015 Markiyan Lubkivsky.

The decision on the Eurobasket 2015 in Ukraine was adopted on 18 December 2011 in Munich. Eurobasket 2015 organizing committee proposed the following cities for the championship: the first stage — Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Kiev, the second stage — Odessa, Lviv, playoffs and finals - Donetsk.

“I cannot imagine how to carry out preparations in the current severe economic and political conditions. The hosting of such a serious competition it's a large-scale project, which demands systematic planning and the complexity of important organisational arrangements. Such projects demand years of preparation and consolidated efforts of thousands of people to be successful”, said Lubkivsky.

He also proposed to hold the 2017 Eurobasket in Ukraine .

“According to force-majeure circumstances I believe that we should appeal to FIBA Europe (European branch of the International Basketball Federation) and ask to give Ukraine the right to stage the European championships in 2017”, he told.

At the same time, he ordered to trust the championship in 2015 to some other European country.

"It would be right as we have already done a lot of preparation; we started to construct the arenas that might be unfinished, we have done a lot of organizational work, which also cannot be lost”, added he.

FIBA had to decide to hold the championship in Ukraine on March 22. Earlier, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have already expressed their desire to stage the European Championship in 2015.

FIBA sees no problem to convey the hosting right for European Championship in 2015 to any country, including Russia, said the head of the Department of Public Relations FIBA Europe Sakis Kontos.

“The main issue for FIBA is developed infrastructure. The host country could provide quality in staging such a big tournament like European Championship. I would like to emphasize that now for us Ukraine is the only host country of Eurobasket. The only one!”, he said.

Sakis Kontos added they haven’t received any official appeals from Ukraine yet.

“Thus, we cannot speculate on transfer of rights in the European Championship 2015 another country”, head of the Department of Public Relations FIBA Europe emphasized.
