MOSCOW, March 07. /ITAR-TASS/. Attempts to “destabilize” the Sochi Paralympics spurred by unrest in Ukraine would fail and Russia would host the event at the highest level, State Duma lower house Deputy Speaker Sergei Zheleznyak said on Friday.

“No attempts to destabilize the situation around them, all the more threats of sanctions or boycotts by ill-wishers in the West, will prevent Russia from meeting its commitments,” the parliamentarian said.

“Society's attention to Paralympic sports grows year by year. It is not just sports, it is an example of willpower, the power of spirit, self-belief and love for the Fatherland that they compete for,” Zheleznyak said.

“When you look at athletes who have health restraints and seeing the results they have achieved in sports, you understand that they are people with unlimited abilities,” he noted.

“Paralympians give belief and hope to those who have health problems, setting an example for others that people should never give up in getting back to active life,” Zheleznyak said, wishing Paralympians new records and victories.

The opening ceremony of the 11th Paralympic Games is due late on Friday at Fisht Olympic Stadium in Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi.
