OTTAWA, February 22. /ITAR-TASS/. Canadian hockey players, after defeating the US team in the semifinal at the Olympic Games in Sochi, had a good chance to win the Olympic gold, local CBC and CTV television observers said, commenting on the Canadians' win on Friday over their long-time opponents 1:0.
Since 1998, when the North American National Hockey League allowed its players to participate in Olympics, Canadians have defeated US players in four Games, including this time in Sochi. After the semifinal match, the Canadian players are set to achieve the aim in Sochi to repeat the Vancouver success.
The Canadians have won, and they will play in the final with Sweden thanks to the entire team's excellent defense. With such defense, it is enough to score one goal, as the game with the US team showed. Attacking would not matter, if opponents would have no possibility to score a goal, CBC believes. Fast and experienced US forwards had no problems with effectiveness, scoring goals in previous matches, but it was not helpful in the semifinal.
This is the third time in 20 years Sweden comes to the Olympic final. They won gold in 1994 and 2006.
