SOCHI, February 13. /Itar-Tass/ - Russian ski jumper Mikhail Maksimochkin injured the eighth rib after a serious fall during training on the K-125 take-off ramp and will therefore miss the large hill competition, Russian national team head coach Alexander Arefiev told Itar-Tass.
Misfortune befell the 20-year-old on Wednesday evening. Preliminary examination revealed chest and abdominal cavity injuries and doctors later found a fracture of the eighth rib, yet on Thursday morning the athlete left the hospital.
“Rib fracture is a painful injury but it does not necessitate a plaster cast or a frame. In our case, we just need to wait until it heals,” said Russian national team head coach Alexander Arefiev.
Maksimochkin’s participation in the large hill competition starting with a qualifying round on February 14 is unlikely. Participation in a team competition on February 17 is under consideration.
Maksimochkin performed best among Russian athletes at the start of the normal hill competition on February 9. His first attempt yielded 10th place yet the athlete failed to improve on the result and finished 30th.
