SOCHI, February 07, 2:49 /ITAR-TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the role of close contacts and mutual understanding with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the fulfillment of Russia’s obligations assumed in Guatemala for the preparation for the Sochi Olympic Games.
“I think I should note once again the constructive, extremely benevolent character of relations between the International Olympic Committee and the Russian Federation,” Putin said at the reception on behalf of IOC President Thomas Bach. “Complete understanding and continuous close contacts largely helped worthily to implement the Olympic project and to fulfill all the obligations our country assumed in Guatemala in 2007,” Putin said.
“The Russian Olympic project is truly unique in many respects, as there are many novelties here in Sochi. I also mean the most modern standards, technologies and technical solutions. And we were certainly striving to show Russia, our country, to the world, the country that treasures its old-age traditions and aspires to the future, the country that, with all its diversity, presents amazing harmony and unity,” said the head of the Russian state.
Putin believes it is highly symbolic that Bach proclaimed the principle of unity and diversity as the motto of his work as the IOC head.
“He is very close to Russia in which the destiny of many nations is closely interwoven and such values of Olympism as mutual respect, fair play and peacefulness were from the times immemorial the core of the national culture and of the national character of the peoples of our country. I believe this largely explains why people in Russia are so keen on sports and on everything associated with them and gladly host sports competitions of the highest level and class,” Putin said.
“It would not be a mistake to surmise that the world awaits the grand sport fete with bated breath and senses its special atmosphere and positive energy. Russia has been striving to implement its Olympic project in the best way, and was doing all so that the Sochi Olympics should be the unforgettable, vivid event , and we believe it will be so,” the Russian President said, proposing a toast to fruitful cooperation of Russia and the IOC and to the coming fete of sports, peace and friendship.
