SOCHI, February 04, 21:49 /ITAR-TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin made the promise to do all for the Olympic Games in Sochi to be at the highest level and expressed the hope that the Games will give a boost to the world Olympic movement.
“I wish to assure you that we will do our best to make Sochi a hospitable home to all the participants in the competitions and to all the guests,” Putin said during the meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach after they had conducted together the ceremony of welcoming members of the International Olympic Committee.
Putin said, “The chief task is to make the Olympic Games in Sochi a feast for all sports fans in the world.”
“I eagerly wish for the Sochi Olympics to become another step towards development of the Olympic movement,” said the head of state.
The theme of a positive impact of sports and the Olympic Games on the young generation was touched upon.
“One of the most important tasks we tackle here in Russia and you do as the President of the IOC is the positive influence on young people,” Putin said.
He stressed that the development of mass sports is a way to prevent teenagers and children from aimlessly spending time in the streets, protects them from harmful habits, use of alcohol and tobacco. He pointed out that in this sense the IOC and other international organizations “play an outstanding role” and made the promise that Russia will do all to support these efforts.
“We will do all for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi to be at the highest level,” Putin said.
Bach noted in this connection that the preparations members of the IOC witnessed give reason to say that the Games will really be at the highest level.
