Pyatigorsk first city in Russia’s North Caucasus to take over Olympic Torch relay

PYATIGORSK, January 23, 9:47 /ITAR-TASS/. The Olympic Flame relay will run in the city of Pyatigorsk, the capital of Russia’s North Caucasian Federal District, on Thursday. The Olympic torches will illuminate sightseeing sites related with great Russian poets Lermontov, Pushkin and famous Russian writer Tolstoy in the oldest Russian balneotherapeutic resort that celebrated its 210th anniversary in the previous year.

The Olympic Flame will be welcomed at 13:00 Moscow time at a railway station in the city. A torchbearer will carry the Olympic torch by historic Pyatigorsk tramway that is the first Russian legendary tramway line launched 110 years ago. The white tramway car decorated with Olympic symbols is already prepared to get on the route.

After the streetcar stage at a distance of 855 meters the Olympic Flame will go to the Tsvetnik Park, which is situated in the heart of the resort city of Pyatigorsk. Passing the Olympic torch to each other each 200-250 meters, torchbearers will run on Gagarin Boulevard, through the resort area to the karstic lake Proval on Mashuk Mount slope, then along Kalinin Avenue to the place of duel of great Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov.

The Olympic Flame relay race will run by the monument to Caucasus governor general Aleksey Yermolov, the Eternal Flame, the Memorial of Memory and ‘the Olympic clocks’, which count down time to the start of the Sochi Olympics. The Olympic Flame relay stage will end in central square in front of the building housing city authorities, where a podium for a cauldron of the Olympic Flame and Olympic rings about 10 meters high are built.

This stage of the Olympic Flame relay will stretch at 15 kilometers, 71 torchbearers will carry the Olympic torch in city streets. After Pyatigorsk the Olympic Flame will go to Stavropol, southern Russia.
