MOSCOW, April 30. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated participants of the European Wrestling Championship opening in the southern Russian city of Kaspiysk on Monday, the Kremlin press service said.
"I’m glad to note that Russia pays great attention to developing wrestling. We are justifiably proud of the names and victories of our distinguished wrestlers, their contribution to strengthening the positions of this spectacular sport in the world. We are sure that the current championship will be held at the highest level," the president said.
Putin thanked the organizer of the championship, the United World Wrestling federation and its head Nenad Lalovic for openness and readiness for cooperation and adhering to the principle that "sports and politics don’t mix."
"Today like during all times sport should unite people and encourage them for new achievements. I wish success and luck for the participants, and good and unforgettable impressions for the fans," Putin noted.
The president said the prestigious international tournament is hosted by Dagestan, which has rich history and culture, and is known for hospitality and a unique school of martial art.
The 2018 European Wrestling Championship is scheduled to be held between April 30 and May 6 in Russia’s Kaspiysk, Dagestan. Athletes representing 32 countries are expected to compete during the championship in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling both in men and women competitions.
