MOSCOW, April 18. /TASS/. President of the German Football Association, Reinhardt Grindel believes Germany’s Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Russia in the framework of the cup competitions in spite of the intentions of diplomats from a number of Western countries to boycott the Cup.
"We’ll hail any support and this concerns Angela Merkel," Grindel told Nordwest Zeitung newspaper. He also recalled that Team Germany would have a meeting with members of the German federal government ahead of the championship in Russia.
"Quite possibly, the issue [of Merkel’s visit to Russia during the championship - TASS] will also be taken up there," he said.
Merkel has not informed the public on her personal plans so far. She is known to be a fan of her country’s national football team and she attended the matches during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
British Prime Minister Theresa May said earlier in the wake of the situation around the alleged poisoning of the former Russian/British double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia members of Royal Family and the British cabinet would not go to Russia to attend the World Cup games.
The media said later the governments of other Western countries planned boycotting the championship, too.
