Irkutsk region police seize some 10 kg of heroin

MOSCOW, August 3. /TASS/. Policemen in the Irkutsk region have seized about 10 kg of heroin worth 16 million rubles ($239,936) from a drug dealer who belonged to an international drug ring, Russian Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk told TASS on Wednesday.

"Officers of the Russian Interior Ministry’s main drug control directorate and operatives of the Irkutsk region’s police department in a joint operation detained a member of an international drug ring with nearly 10 kilograms of heroin. Thus they have seized from illegal turnover more than 20,000 single doses. Their estimated value on the "black market" is worth more than 16 million rubles," she said.

According to her, the operation to detain the suspect took place on a highway near Angarsk. "Acting on intelligence information, the operatives, together with the traffic police inspectors, stopped a transport vehicle. The policemen used a sniffer dog to find the banned load. They seized from the suspect’s car a duffel bag with 17 parcels containing a white powdery substance that was determined by experts as heroin", Volk said.

The Irkutsk region’s police investigators have opened a criminal case over the "Illegal manufacture, sale or shipping of narcotic, psychotropic substances or their analogues on a large scale" under Article 228.1, part 5 of the Russian Criminal Code. The suspect has been taken into custody.
