Gunman shot dead in counterterrorism operation in Russia's Dagestan

MAKHACHKALA, July 11. /TASS/. The counterterrorism operation in a village in Dagestan, the Russian North Caucasian region, has ended after the gunman was shot dead, a source with the Northern Caucasian Federal District’s law enforcement bodies told TASS on Monday.

"The special counterterrorism operation has ended in the village of Miskindzha in the Dokuzparinsky district in Dagestan. The gunman, Admir Talibov, was shot dead," he said, adding the house caught fire in the course of the operation and experts would examine it on Tuesday morning.

"Earlier, Talibov was an accomplice of the so-called ‘southern’ gang but since August 2015 went underground and was put on the wanted list. It was he who bought the car that a suicide bomber detonated at the Dzhemikent police checking point in Dagestan this February. There is information that he helped to install explosives into the car," the source said.

Earlier on Monday at 16.30 Moscow Standard Time (13.30 GMT) a counterterrorism operation was launched in the village of Miskindzha in Dagestan. A source with the Northern Caucasian Federal District’s law enforcement bodies told TASS that the house where Talibov holed up had been besieged.

A TASS source, who was at the scene, said Talibov’s mother attempted to mediate his surrender. But the man refused and opened fire at the law enforcement officers.

A spokesperson for the National Anti-Terrorism Committee told TASS, citing intelligence reports, that the militant planned to join the Islamic State terrorist group.
