Wildfires in Russia grow 2% over past 24 hours to over 8,000 hectares

MOSCOW, June 7. /TASS/. Wildfires raging across Russia have grown 2% over the past 24 hours to almost 8,300 hectares, with more than half of them in the Trans-Baikal Territory in East Siberia, the aerial forest protection service Avialesokhrana told TASS on Tuesday.

"As of midnight Moscow time on June 7, there were 63 wildfires in Russia on the area of 8,266 hectares, including 11 fires in forest areas on the territory of 4,236 hectares [the Trans-Baikal Territory]," the service said in a statement.

The wildfires in the neighboring Republic of Buryatia cover almost 2,600 hectares.

The firefighting effort currently involves almost 2,700 people. Over the past 24 hours, they have managed to extinguish 77 wildfires on the total area of 1,800 hectares.
