More than 18,000 hectares of forest engulfed by wildfires in Russia

Some 2,600 people and 515 pieces of equipment, including 18 aircraft, are taking part in the firefighting effort

MOSCOW, June 2. /TASS/. Almost 70 wildfires are raging on the area of more than 18,000 hectares in various Russian regions, the aerial forest protection service Avialesokhrana told TASS on Thursday.

Major fire outbreaks are in the Republic of Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory in East Siberia, and in the Tuva Republic in southern Siberia. Some 2,600 people and 515 pieces of equipment, including 18 aircraft, are taking part in the firefighting effort.

"Over the past 24 hours, 72 wildfires on the area of almost 2,000 hectares have been extinguished in Russia," a spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the wildfire area in the Trans-Baikal Territory has doubled to almost 3,600 hectares. The state of emergency is in force in the Far Eastern Amur Region, Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory.
