Unidentified gunmen open fire at police in Russia's North Caucasus

In Dagestan gunmen opened fire on a transmitting tower, and shelled police when they arrived to the site — a law enforcement source

MAKHACHKALA, May 24. /TASS/. Unidentified gunmen shelled police officers in Russia’s North Caucasian republic of Dagestan on Tuesday, a law enforcement source told TASS.

"In Dagestan’s Shamil district, gunmen opened fire on a transmitting tower, and shelled police when they arrived to the site," the source said, adding that no police officers had been wounded.

He said search for the gunmen continued, while field engineers were checking whether the tower had been mined.

The press service of the Russian Interior Ministry’s department for Dagestan confirmed the shelling incident. "It came at about 18:00 Moscow time in a forest area," it said.
