Area of wildfires in Siberia exceeds 20,000 hectares for the first time this year

A total of 889 people and 145 units of equipment are extinguishing fire, along with Russian Emergencies Ministry’s aircraft

CHITA, May 18. /TASS/. The area of wildfires in Russia’s Zabaikalsky Krai continues to grow and has exceeded 20,000 hectares for the first time this year.

"A total of 31 wildfires is blazing in Zabaikalsky Krai on an area of 22,500 hectares, including 20,700 hectares of forests. Eleven wildfires were localized on an area of 4,800 hectares. Fire areas are registered in 13 regions," State Forestry Service said on Wednesday.

A total of 889 people and 145 units of equipment are extinguishing fire, along with Russian Emergencies Ministry’s aircraft, including Be-200ChS and Il-76. Three Mi-8 helicopter, one Mi-2 helicopter and three An-2 aircraft also help in firefighting.

It was earlier reported that the state of emergency was declared in Zabailaksky Krai due to dry windy weather and high temperatures.
