NEW YORK, April 1. /TASS/. The New York State authorities have established a month of the Russian-American history which will start from mid-April, Olga Zatsepina, the president of the Russian American Cultural Heritage Center, told TASS on Friday.
"We are proud to announce that both houses (the Senate and Assembly) of the legislative body of the state of New York have passed a resolution establishing the month of the Russian-American history in the state," she said, adding that the lawmakers recommended the governor of the New York State, Andrew Cuomo, to sign the resolution "thus, proclaiming April a month of the Russian-American history at a higher level."
She said the document was put for voting by Senator Adriano Espaillat. In line with the protocol, the resolution will be referred to the Russian ambassador to the United States and the Russian consul general in New York.
Members of the Coalition of Russian Compatriot Organizations will attend a joint session of the New York State Senate and Assembly on April 11, when the resolution will be officially entered into the register of documents of legislative authorities, Zatsepina, who is also the president of the Coalition, said, adding that representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church will hand down a blessing to the lawmakers at their request.
"The historic adoption of the resolution means recognition of the enormous contribution of Russian Americans to the history of the state and the entire country," she said.
This year, the month of the Russian-American history will be dedicated to the 55th anniversary Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first space flight. The program of the month will include dozens of events organized by the Coalition of Russian Compatriot Organizations, in particular a visit by Coalition delegates and officials from the Moscow city government to the Senate and Assembly of the state of New York, an international children’s painting competition My Space, the tenth international children’s festival of Russian culture, and others.
The month of the Russian-American history has been annually held since 2012, when the Coalition of Russian Compatriot Organizations was set up. Back then, it incorporated about ten organizations of Russian compatriots. This year, about 50 Russian compatriot organizations will take part in the month’s events
The official opening ceremony will be held at Russia’s consulate general in New York on April 14.
