NEW YORK, March 24. /TASS/. A month of the Russian-American history will be opened in the state of New York in mid-April. This year, this even will be dedicated to the 55th anniversary of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first space flight, Olga Zatsepina, the president of the Russian-US Nasledie (Heritage) Center, told TASS on Wednesday.
The program of the month includes dozens of events organized by the Coalition of Russian Compatriot Organizations, Zatsepina, who is also the president of the Coalition, said. These will include a visit by Coalition delegates and officilas from the Moscow city government to the Senate and Assembly of the state of New York, an international children’s painting competition My Space, the tenth international children’s festival of Russian culture, and others.
The month of the Russian-American history has been annually held since 2012, when the Coalition of Russian Compatriot Organizations was set up. Back then, it incorporated about ten organizations of Russian compatriots. It filed a petition to the Senate of the state of New York to establish a month of the Russian-American history.
This year, about 50 Russian compatriot organizations will take part in the month’s events. "One of the key goals of the month is to share knowledge about the contribution Russian Americans made to the history of the United States and the entire world," Zatsepina noted.
The official opening ceremony will be held at Russia’s consulate general in New York on April 14.
