Russian military ecological unit to collect over 1,000 tons of garbage on Wrangel Island

The garbage mostly consists of scrap metal and metal barrels for combustibles and lubricants that have been accumulated on the island for decades

VLADIVOSTOK, March 23. /TASS/. The ecological unit of the Eastern Military District will continue environmental rehabilitation of the Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean this year on the territory of around 10 hectares. It is planned to collect over 1,000 tons of garbage, head of the Eastern Military District’s press service Col. Alexander Gordeyev said on Wednesday.

"Expanding the scale of work is connected with the increased number of people in the ecological unit and the equipment that they use which will allow to collect over one ton of garbage. Works will start at the beginning of the summer," Gordeyev said.

He noted that servicemen also use graders and cranes in their work. Arctic garbage is sorted with the help of presses. The garbage mostly consists of scrap metal and metal barrels for combustibles and lubricants that have been accumulated on the island for decades. Scrap metal will later be transported to the continent by ships of the Pacific Fleet.

In 2015 servicemen of the ecological unit collected over 700 tons of garbage and cleared around three hectares on the island, Gordeyev reminded.
