Latvian drug courier released in Brussels due to absence of interpreter

The Latvian national was detained at the airport of Brussels upon arrival from Dubai with four kilograms of cocaine in his luggage

BRUSSELS, February 29. /TASS/. A Latvian drug courier detained with four kilograms of cocaine at a Belgian airport has been allowed to walk free after no interpreter was found to help his defense team, RTBF TV channel said on Monday.

"A Latvian national was detained at the airport of Brussels upon arrival from Dubai with four kilograms of cocaine in his luggage. Police failed to question him as the suspect didn’t speak any foreign languages," RTBF said.

An interpreter from the Latvian embassy was invited for the first interrogation but he demanded payment for his services during the trial. Therefore, the local prosecutors decided to release the smuggler, the TV channel reported.
