MOSCOW, January 26. /TASS/. The Russian consumer rights watchdog has declared a flu epidemic in Moscow and enforced quarantine in the city, the capital’s chief sanitary doctor said on Tuesday.

As of January 25, the epidemic threshold "exceeds 37.8%," Yelena Andreyeva said in a statement.

"Taking into consideration the current flu outbreak, since January 26 all the public departments are under quarantine," the statement said.

According to the document, all Moscow children’s homes and boarding schools will be closed for visitors.

The Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights has also introduced special morning checks in kindergartens and schools to prevent sick children from communicating with others.

Rospotrebnadzor chief Anna Popova said on Monday the epidemiologic threshold was exceeded in 37 Russian regions.

The flu cases are now on the rise in Russia and are mainly caused by the swine virus strain. Russia’s Health Ministry said 31% of Russians had been vaccinated against the flu.

Swine flu is contagious and spreads in the same way as the seasonal flu. The most serious complication of the flu is pneumonia, leading to fatal cases.
