Russian online service offers translations from Elvish language invented by Tolkien

The launch of the new function was dedicated to Tolkien’s birthday celebrated on January 3

MOSCOW, January 15. /TASS/. Yandex.Perevdochik, a Russian online translation service, has started translating Sindarin, a fictional language devised by English fantasy author J. R. R. Tolkien, the company said on Friday.

"Our team has studied Elvish manuscripts and attempted to restore one of the most ancient languages of the Middle-Earth," Yandex said. "Now Yandex.Perevdochik knows how to say ‘My precious’ in Elvish. And it can make translation from Sindarin to any of 66 languages operated by the service."

The company said that the launch of the new function was dedicated to Tolkien’s birthday celebrated on January 3.

Tolkien was a philologist by profession, and spent much time on his constructed languages. The Elvish languages were the first thing he imagined for his secondary world of the Middle-Earth. The writer said that his classic fantasy works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, grew out of his languages.
