YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, January 14. /TASS/. A magnitude 6.2 earthquake has hit Russia’s Far Eastern Kuril Island, a spokesman for the Sakhalin region department of the Russian emergencies ministry said on Thursday.

"The earthquake was registered at 13:25 Sakhalin time [6:25 a.m. Moscow time] some 392 kilometers west of the village of Krabozavodskoye in the South Kuril district. The epicenter was located at a depth of 70 kilometers," the spokesman said, adding that no earth tremors had been felt in Sakhalin.

Earlier on Thursday, Japan Meteorological Agency reported a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in the north of Japan. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 50 kilometers in Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido. A tsunami warning was issued.
