KRASNODAR, November 26. /TASS/. Police in the south of Russia have detained the acting head and six guards of a juvenile prison suspected of beating seven inmates, one of whom has died, the state Investigative Committee said on Thursday.
The Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) has sent a group of inspectors headed by its director to investigate. FSIN deputy chief Oleg Korshunov told TASS that "serious punishments" would follow.
Some 660,000 inmates are currently held in Russian prisons — 55% of them reconvicted offenders. About 1,800 inmates are detained for terrorist and extremist crimes.
