YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, October 2. /TASS/. At least one person has been killed and 16 others have been hospitalized after a powerful cyclone hit the island of Sakhalin in Russia's Far East, local authorities said on Friday.
"As a result of the cyclone, one person has died and 16 have been sent to hospital, including one child," the department of the region’s information policy told TASS citing preliminary data.
The island was flooded by 40% of a month's normal rainfall. Wind force reached 39 meters per hour, felling more than 1,000 trees in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the island’s capital, and damaging 218 roofs.
Sakhalin governor Oleg Kozhemyako had to leave the Black Sea resort of Sochi, currently assembling an economic forum.
