Hainan briefs media on development of eco-friendly infrastructure in Boao

According to Hu Yaowen, president of the Hainan branch of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, authorities selected and modernized technologies from all over the world

BOAO /China/, March 26. /TASS/. The organizers of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) which kicked off on the Chinese island of Hainan presented achievements in the development of a local ecological infrastructure to the public. Hu Yaowen, president of the Hainan branch of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, gave media representatives a tour.

The forum territory has recently been equipped with modern equipment that allows not only to supply buildings with electricity using environmentally friendly energy, but also to maintain an acceptable level of humidity on the premises, according to a TASS reporter. The journalists were taken up to the roof of one of the hotels to inspect the solar panels installed there.

"We have selected and upgraded technologies from all over the world," Hu Yaowen said. "A lot of work has been done to fine tune the microclimate according to the conditions of the tropics. We have adopted a number of technical measures that are optimally suited for Boao."

According to the head of the academy's branch, the experience of both Chinese and foreign experts was taken into account in the establishment of an almost completely carbon-free zone at the forum site. Hu Yaowen also explained the principles of air conditioning in the premises of the BFA press center, the area of which exceeds 4.3 thousand square meters. The process is achieved through natural ventilation, special insulation on the roof, sun blinds and modern high-efficiency equipment. Green technologies make this building fully self-sufficient in electricity in an autonomous mode.

The organizers explained that the mangroves in the southern part of Dongyu Island, where the BFA is held every year, act as a natural filter for the surrounding water bodies. Modern aeration units and ultrafiltration methods are used to improve water quality by removing harmful substances from the water while preserving beneficial elements and improving its taste. Solar-powered lanterns line the paths in the parks and in the forum area itself. Recycling of materials is actively used in construction and design works.

The BFA has been regularly held since 2001 and has about 30 participating countries (Asia-Pacific states). This year it will be held on March 26-29 themed "Asia and the World: Common Challenges, Common Responsibilities". The Boao Forum for Asia is called the Eastern Davos; it is a major platform for the signing of major agreements, coordination of positions between representatives of business and government circles of Asian countries and all other regions of the world. Chinese authorities pay great attention to its development and view this mechanism as an effective instrument of soft diplomacy, which promotes and strengthens Beijing's international contacts.
