New coronavirus cases double in Russia in past four weeks, watchdog chief says

According to Anna Popova, coronavirus and flu peaks did not coincide in the past two years

MOSCOW, November 9. /TASS/. New coronavirus cases doubled in Russia in the past four weeks, Anna Popova, head of the national sanitary watchdog, said.

"The number of new coronavirus patients is growing rapidly. We saw it double in the past four weeks," she said in an interview with the Rossiya-1 TV channel.

"We don't expect [a peak in cases], but we are making preparations. It will depend on numerous factors, including the upcoming holiday season and migration processes. The current trend is upward," the watchdog chief noted.

According to Popova, coronavirus and flu peaks did not coincide in the past two years. "The viruses are competing for every host, so lucky for us, they are unable to ‘attack’ the human population at the same time. However, it may happen if we don’t protect ourselves," she concluded.
