US court sentences Russian to 6.5 years in jail on cybercrime charges — lawyer

The Russian citizens was also sentenced to a symbolic fine of about $200 and a restitution of $8.8 million

WASHINGTON, April 20. /TASS/. The US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia on Friday sentenced Russian citizen Yuri Martyshev, extradited from Latvia to US in 2017, to six and half years in prison on charges of cybercrime, his lawyer told TASS.

"A verdict has been passed for Russian citizen Yuri Martyshev, who earlier pleaded guilty to two charges - complicity and unauthorized computer access. In total, those charges entail the punishment of up to 15 years in prison," Alexei Tarasov said. "The judge sentenced him to 78 months behind bars, or 6.5 years. Considering the good behavior reward, which is 54 days every year, his term may be cut by another year in total. By now, Yuri has spent two years in detention, so he has about 3.5 years in prison left."

The Russian citizens was also sentenced to a symbolic fine of about $200. He also must pay about $8.8 million "in restitution" for the crimes he had committed.

"But this does not mean that he must give the money tomorrow," Tarasov said.

No appeal will be filed, because the Russian citizen has earlier signed a plea bargain.

Martyshev is accused of helping run a service that let cyber criminals test-drive malware before attacking victims.
