Ukrainian, Russian human rights ombudspersons discuss possible meeting

Ukrainian parliament’s Human Rights Ombudsperson Lyudmila Denisova said the date under discussion was January 14

KIEV, January 11. /TASS/. The Ukrainian parliament’s Human Rights Ombudsperson Lyudmila Denisova may meet with Russian Human Rights Ombudsperson Tatyana Moskalkova soon, as she herself wrote on Facebook on Friday.

"Today, I held a telephone conversation with Russian Human Rights Ombudsperson Tatyana Moskalkova," Denisova said. "We discussed the possibility of meeting in Moscow on Monday. I said I was ready to meet with her for we have many issues to discuss," she added.

Meanwhile, the Russian ombudsperson’s press service said that Moskalkova was scheduled to make a working visit to Uzbekistan on January 15-18. "The press service has no information concerning a possible meeting with Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsperson Lyudmila Denisova," the press service said.

In June 2018, the presidents of Russia and Ukraine agreed that the two countries’ human rights ombudspersons would visit jailed Russian and Ukrainian nationals. However, Denisova several times violated the agreements the two ombudspersons had reached concerning visits to prisoners.

The two held meetings in Moscow and managed to outline a schedule of visits on a reciprocal basis but eventually failed to implement the plan.

On Thursday, Denisova once again said she intended to visit Moscow. According to her, she wanted to visit the Ukrainian sailors detained in the Kerch Strait for border violation.
