Russians preferred war films, comedies and cartoons in 2018

Fairytales and animated movies, as well as comedies are also among the favorites

MOSCOW, December 28. /TASS/. In 2018, Russian cinemagoers preferred war films, animated movies and comedies, a poll held by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center timed to the International Cinema Day informed TASS on Friday.

"Russians tend to see war films (27%), fairytales and animated movies (26%), and comedies (25%). People in the 45-59 age group and the senior generation (60 and older) prefer war films. Cinemagoers from 25 to 34 years see fairytales and animated movies more often (40%), while the younger generation (18-24 years) prefers comedies (42%). At the same time, a lower percentage of respondents have been watching cartoons and comedies in the past year," the message by the polling center informs.

The Russian Public Opinion Research Center added that in 2018, more Russians (22%) have watched detective films compared to last year’s 13%. Sixteen percent of respondents prefer dramas (21% among women), and 15% tend to see adventure movies. One in ten Russians like melodramas (16% among female moviegoers), and the same percentage of cinema lovers prefer thrillers and horror movies (37% among the 18-24 age group). Nine percent of pollsters consider themselves fans of action films (15% among male viewers).

Eighty-three percent of respondents claim that they prefer Russian-made films (83%), while US movies took second place (40%). Fifteen percent of Russian moviegoers tend to watch French films, while some prefer British (8%) and Indian pictures (6%).

"The structure of cinema consumption is changing significantly, but first I would like to note a strong preference for Russian cinema. To what extent is the demand for it being met? According to the Cinema Fund’s data for the third quarter of 2018, Russian-made films attracted 32% of the audience, and this segment has grown compared to a similar period from last year. At the same time, the demand is 2.5 times higher, which obviously shows that the measures of state support of the Russian cinema are working," a representative of the polling center stated.

The poll was conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center on December 25, 2018, among 1,600 Russians over the age of 18 via a telephone call. The margin of sampling error does not exceed 2.5% with a 95% probability.
