One in five Russians to become volunteers by 2024, says deputy PM

Over $392 million will be allocated for the development of volunteer activity under the federal project over six years

MOSCOW, December 27. /TASS/. About 20% of Russians, or 30 million people, will be engaged in volunteer activity by 2024, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said at a session of the State Council on Thursday.

"The federal project ‘Social Activity’ will be launched on January 1, 2019, as part of the national project ‘Education.’ One of its main tasks is the expansion of participation to involve 20% of our citizens, that is almost 30 million people, in volunteer activity by 2024," Golikova said.

She specified that the events planned by the project are in particular directed at the solution of the task of unequal development of volunteer centers in regions and the launch of system programs of financial support to educate volunteers. "Infrastructure will be created as part of the project to support the activity of volunteers, staff will be prepared to work with them, and contests to involve school students in volunteer movements will be held," the deputy prime minister noted.

Golikova added that more than 27 billion rubles ($392 million) will be allocated for the development of volunteer activity under the federal project over six years. "Almost 2 billion rubles [$30 million] was allocated to create a system of social support for volunteers, which will cover the territory of all regions. This project stipulates the creation of 318 regional resource centers of volunteering, volunteer centers in educational organizations of all types and centers of ‘silver’ volunteering," she specified.
