Far Eastern authorities seek Russian rescuers’ aid in evacuating tourists from China

Currently, about 160 residents of Khabarovsk Territory are unable to leave Hainan due to problems of their tour operator, Pearl River

KHABAROVSK, December 16. /TASS/. The administration of Russia’s Far Eastern Khabarovsk Territory may ask the Russian Emergencies Ministry to send a plane for Russian tourists, stuck on China’s resort island of Hainan, the region’s governor Sergei Furgal said on his official Instagram page.

Currently, about 160 residents of Khabarovsk Territory are unable to leave Hainan due to problems of their tour operator, Pearl River.

"As of midnight local time (17:00 Moscow time on Saturday), a flight to Khabarovsk was not yet organized. The situation is critical, a plane must be found as soon as possible. We will do our best. Possibly, we will manage to come to an agreement with the Russian Emergencies Ministry and organize a plane to Khabarovsk," he said.

One of the tourists, who is now in the Chinese city of Haikou, said she and her family rejected an offer to return to Russia on a plane via the Urals city of Chelyabinsk and the capital Moscow, which meant that she was supposed to cross the entire vast territory of Russia twice.

Earlier, the Irkutsk-based air carrier IrAero said it would suspend flights to two airports of China’s Hainan Island - Haikou and Sanya - due to the debts of the Pearl River tour operator that amount to about $2.3 million. Pearl River, which opened its office in Russia last year, said the company had no debts, and the departures were delayed due to breakdown of planes.

After the Russian authorities interfered, IrAero said it would evacuate all stranded tourists who have valid return tickets for IrAero flights. According to latest IrAero figures, about 1,500 Russian tourists are now unable to leave Haikou, many of them have been waiting for their departure since December 8.

The exact number of Russians who are unable to return home is unknown, due to the fact that Pearl River did not provide some of its customers with a return ticket, giving them a legally invalid itinerary receipt instead.
