Putin agrees to think about improving system for granting pardons

The Presidential Pardons Commission was wound up in 2001

MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t rule out the possibility of improving the work of a system for issuing pardons.

At a meeting with Head of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, Mikhail Fedotov, the President raised the issue of the Presidential Pardons Commission, recalling that it was wound up in 2001.

"When we wound it up and handed over things to the regions, there were many complaints about the activities of this presidential commission, it was obvious that (the institute) was totally bureaucratic <...>," Putin stated.

"If you see that it doesn’t work properly there, let’s get back and take a look," the President stressed.

Fedotov in turn said that the establishment of regional commissions was the right decision, noting however that it is important to "complete the creation of the system" by making the regional commissions send their rulings to the presidential commission.

"Let’s think how we can improve this work," Putin said, pointing out that he agrees to take a look.
