Russia may join WHO Executive Board in 2019

The country may join it for a three-year term

MOSCOW, December 6. /TASS/. Russia may join the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019 for a three-year term. The corresponding statement was adopted at a session of the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Athens, the press service of the Russian Health Ministry reported on Thursday.

"The permanent committee of the Regional Committee proposed the Russian Federation as a member of the WHO Executive Board for the period from 2019 to [early] 2022," the press service said in a report.

The functions of the Executive Board include the execution of solutions adopted at the World Health Assembly, as well as consultative support. The Executive Board consists of 34 members.

At a meeting with WHO Regional Director for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab in Athens Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova "confirmed Russia’s support for the operation of the WHO as a priority area and the readiness to cooperate in sharing Russia’s experience in the fight with contagious and non-contagious diseases, the digitalization of health care and the provision of medical help to the population of remote territories.
