George HW Bush helped establish friendly relations between Russia, US, says PM

"We will preserve the good memory of this outstanding man," Dmitry Medvedev assured

MOSCOW, December 1. /TASS/. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has expressed condolences to former US President George W Bush on the death of his father, the 41st President of the United States George HW Bush.

The Russian PM has sent a personal telegram to George W Bush, expressing his deepest condolences. "An outstanding government official and politician, deservedly respected and recognized all over the world, has passed away. I would like to highlight the huge personal contribution of George Bush Sr. to the establishment of friendly relations between the Russian Federation and the United States of America, as well as his genuine interest in our country, its history and culture," Medvedev wrote.

"We will preserve the good memory of this outstanding man," the Russian PM assured.

He wished "courage and resilience" to George W Bush in order to overcome this loss, and asked to deliver a message of support to the family and friends of George HW Bush.

George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States, has died at the age of 94, his office reported on Saturday. He is survived by his five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two siblings.

During his time as US president, he has held seven meetings with USSR and Russian leaders - Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin. As a result of these meetings, the leaders signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties (START I and II).
