Health Ministry supports genetic research to combat HIV/AIDS

Healthcare Minister Veronika Skvortsova specified that the respective research advances rather quickly

MOSCOW, November 29. /TASS/. The Russian Ministry of Health supports research to develop a Russian vaccine to combat HIV infection, based on genetic modification, Healthcare Minister Veronika Skvortsova told a briefing on Thursday.

"New research is underway based on... the so-called CRISPR-Cas, when T-cells received from HIV-positive persons are modified ...to make them insensitive to HIV," the minister explained.

She said the research advances rather quickly, as it resembles a lot the methods of CAR-T technologies used to research cancers. An agency subordinated to the Healthcare ministry has developed a vaccine prototype. "We support this research," the minister stressed.
