Moscow to subsidize legal aid for Russians being tried in US courts

The initiative was proposed by the Association of Lawyers of Russia

MOSCOW, November 20. /TASS/. The Association of Lawyers of Russia (ALR) is willing to provide legal assistance and protect the interests of Russian citizens in US courts. The organization will be sponsored via a federal subsidy, covering the cost of its legal services, ALR’s Managing Director, Chief of Staff, and Board Member, Stanislav Alexandrov, told a news conference.

"The association arranges this work, while subsidies will be allocated to pay for the services of defending our nationals in US courts. America’s legal defense is rather costly, so the association cannot do that free of charge. The corresponding government directive will help us," he stressed.

The ALR chief didn’t rule out that the association may provide legal assistance to Viktor Bout and Konstantin Yaroshenko. "We receive requests from people, who are in dire straits. As for those citizens and their (Bout and Yaroshenko’s - TASS) support, we cannot write it off if we receive their consent," Alexandrov explained.

On November 14, the Kremlin signed a decree, which envisages granting a subsidy to the Association of Lawyers of Russia to defend specific Russian citizens in US courts against violations of their rights and freedom.
